    Shannon had never been whipped, although Henry
had threatened it more than once as the next logical step
beyond paddling unless Shannon mended her ways.  She
really didn't know what to expect, except that it would be a
profoundly unpleasant experience, especially since her
bottom was already so sore that the lightest slap would
make her gasp.

    They went out to the glassed-in patio, with Shannon
still clad only in her underwear, and after the adults were
settled in the wicker furniture Henry said to her,  "I've
decided to punish you for disobedience by giving you a
whipping with a switch."  Shannon felt a bit lightheaded at
the news, but she remained silent as he went on, "I want
you to go out and cut a few birch switches, from three to
four feet long, up to an inch thick at the base.  I want only
green, pliant switches."  He took his pocketknife from his
pocket and handed it to her.  "After you bring them back
we'll decide which one to use on you."
